July 4th Celebration!

Play Café begins Saturday, June 4th

Join us for the 2011 Season of Play Café! This program was begun by a group of parents who wanted to drink some coffee, read the paper, socialize, and get the kids out of the house early Saturday morning so their spouse could sleep in! Josiah Royse, on E. Selby Blvd, 854-9944, is running the program. Sometimes we just get out and play, other weekends there are scheduled programs. Join us at the Selby Park Shelter House for this relaxing Saturday morning Colonial Hills tradition!

Thank-you to everyone who came out to our block watch meeting on January 12th led by Ofc. Tammy Floyd, of the Worthington Police Department. Newly minted Police Chief James Mosic, and Lt. Jerry Strait also fielded residents’ questions. Chief Mosic noted that Worthington now releases information to the website, www.crimereports.com and you can go there to see locations and information of crime in our neighborhood. Lt. Strait noted that he hears quite a few captured criminals state “They told me not to come to Worthington.” He mused and stated next, “I think that’s a bonus!”

The Worthington Division of Police is scheduling a Citizen’s Police Academy for 2011. Details are here in this cover letter and application form. Please contact Officer Tammy Floyd, TFLOYD@CI.WORTHINGTON.OH.US for questions or to sign up.

I think that’s a bonus too! Worthington and Colonial Hills are known for strict police enforcement, but the WPD rely on residents’ reports to apprehend criminals. It is very rare that a marked police car is able to catch a criminal in the act without a tip from a local neighbor, and that is what the block watch is all about.

Approximately 40 neighbors attended the kickoff meeting which included crime statistics for District 3, our district in the City of Worthington, and Block Watch Tenants by Ofc. Floyd, interspersed by questions from the audience. The main theme of the presentation was that organized neighbors who watch out for criminal or suspicious behavior and report it to local law enforcement help prevent crime and promote cooperation among residents and police. Also summarizing the presentation, Ofc. Floyd provided handouts describing the tenants of a block watch, attached. Additionally, attached are my meeting minutes.

Contact information of members volunteering to be Captains has been forwarded to Ofc. Floyd, who will then contact you with more information about Captain’s responsibilities. I am still coordinating zones for each Captain and will be sending out maps of each zone when that is finalized.

I look forward to working with the Captains and the Worthington Police Department to keep our community a safe place to live. If you haven’t officially signed up for the Block Watch yet on the Google form, take the time to do so, and pass it on to anyone else you think might want to join.

Best Regards,
Rachael Dorothy
