2021 Fourth of July: Celebrate Together…ish

Although the CDC guidelines and the requirements of Parks and Rec continue to evolve, we have planned events for both Saturday, July 3, and Sunday, July 4, which will knock your red, white and blue socks off!

1) Saturday, July 3

  • Kiddie Parade – Show up at 10:00 am with your decorated bikes, trikes, wagons, scooters, strollers, pets, or anything else decorated that moves – and we will take care of the social distancing, so that the kiddos can show off their creativity parading around the park.
  • Food Trucks –
Kona Ice will be here, and will be free thanks to CyMack’s generous sponsorship!
And Ajumama – Korean Street Food with their delicious bulgogi cheesesteak, along with hot dogs and chicken tenders for the youngsters, and french fries aplenty!
We will put cones out for you to safely line up.
  • No Midway Games this year – but we will be handing out craft kits and goody bags after the Kiddie Parade.
And make sure your kids get their Patriotic Peanuts Cups with lids & straws, which have patriotic Peanuts characters illustrations, ready for kids to color and use, and generously sponsored by Sassafras Bakery, with a coupon for Sassafras in each cup.
  • House Decorating Competition – To close out our first day of events, you are invited to get out your red, white and blue decorations by no later than 5:00 pm, for the second annual 4th of July house decorating contest. The secret judges will be driving around the neighborhood between 5:00 and 7:00 pm to vote on the best, and results will be posted on our Facebook page later that evening.

2) Sunday, July 4

Good morning, Colonial Hills! Happy 4th of July!

  • We will be holding an In-person 5k Race this year at 8:30 am at Selby Park!
  • And, the same as last year, we will also be holding a Virtual Run, which you can complete any time between July 4 and July 10.

Please see the 5k Race blogpost below for details, and go to our race website: https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Worthington/RunthroughtheHills to sign up for either the in-person race or the virtual run.

And don’t forget to sign up now, before registration closes at midnight on July 2 (there is no “day-of” registration this year before the race).

5k Race – In-person (7/4) and Virtual (7/4-7/10)

1) We will be holding an in-person race on Sunday, July 4, starting at 8:30 am at Selby Park, and sending the runners off in a series of wave starts to help keep everyone socially distant, as you run through beautiful tree-lined streets of Colonial Hills in Worthington, Ohio.
These staggered small groups will be based on your anticipated pace per mile; the event time is done with chip timing and the race results will reflect the actual chip start and finishing time.

We are holding the race on Sunday to allow all the runners/walkers to complete the entire race without interrupting the Kiddie Parade, which will be held on Saturday, July 3.

Make sure you sign up soon, and by no later than midnight July 2, on our race website: https://runsignup.com/Race/OH/Worthington/RunthroughtheHills, because we will not be doing race day registration, and we are capping the in-person race at 150 people this year.

Awards will be presented immediately after the race, as follows:

  • To the top overall male and female finishers and the top Junior (age 19 and under) finishers.
  • And age group awards, female and male, will be given to the top three finishers in these age groups:
  • 12 and under
    13-19
    20-29
    30-39
    40-49
    50-59
    and 60 and over.

2) You can also sign up on our race website for our Virtual Run, which can be completed any time between July 4 and July 10. Just like last year, you can run, jog or walk any 5k route you want, and don’t have to submit your time unless you want to. However, no awards will be given for the virtual race.

The cost for everyone, for both the in-person and virtual races, is $25.00, plus a nominal processing fee. Also, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ENTER AN ACCURATE EMAIL ADDRESS WHEN REGISTERING, so that we can contact you for any follow-up information.

Please see the race website for further details, including early pick up for your race bib with its embedded chip for timing — and register now, before you forget! And you can click here for the Race’s current status.

Selby Park Playground Update and Other Information

Updates from the Worthington Parks & Recreation Department:

Selby Park Playground Replacement Update

Thank you to everyone who came to the Selby Playground Replacement in-person open house and those who posted comments on-line. We are reviewing the comments and will be sharing our final playground design early next week. Results will be available on our website at: Selby Park Playground Replacement Process

Selby Park Playground Oak Tree Removal

You may have noticed in our playground designs the beautiful, large, split trunk oak tree is missing. Many of you commented on it and we wanted to provide an explanation. Unfortunately, we will be removing it during the playground renovation. Our certified arborists have been monitoring the health and condition of that tree for many years. The double forked structure of the tree has been a concern as well as its declining health, especially given its proximity to the busy playground where so many kids and families congregate. Those split trunk trees are especially dangerous as they decline because they are prone to splitting and falling at a moment’s notice. Since we have been aware of its decline for a while, we have been planting trees along the west boundary of the playground in anticipation of it being removed. We will also be improving the mulch area on the east boundary of the playground by planting new large species trees that will provide shade for years to come. All of our designs also included shade over the seating area in the middle of the playground.

Selby Shelter Improvements

We saw many comments in our Selby Park Playground Replacement feedback about the shelter and when it might be improved. This has been an expressed goal of the city in the Parks Master Plan and there is funding in the 2022 Capital Improvements Program (CIP) to assess the west end of the park including the aging shelter building. The design work will look at the best future layout for the entire west end of the park (including the parking lot) and assess whether to renovate or replace the existing shelter. Staff will begin working with residents early in 2022 on the project.
